Reach out and touch: extending access using social media

National Library of Scotland has strategic and corporative objectives to open up access to the Library’s collections, and has been working with a number of different social media tools to achieve its aims. This presentation will discuss the NLS’ active digitisation program and our methods for further extending access via the video and image hosting services YouTube and Flickr.  These services have, with minimal overheads, enabled us to reach and interact with new customers, see an increase in the use and re-use of collections and raise awareness of the organisation.

In 2010, the organisation has also developed its first ‘app’ for iPod and iPhone, an exploration of the John Murray Archive.  The app has been developed to appeal to remote users and complement exhibition visits.
